VRTEACHER project successfully concluded

The consortium is thrilled to share with you the final edition of our newsletter, marking the culmination of the VRTEACHER project. Over the past two years, we have embarked on a transformative journey to revolutionize teacher training through the power of virtual reality (VR). Today, we celebrate the successful completion of this groundbreaking initiative. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the participants, partner organizations, and stakeholders who have contributed to the success of the VRTEACHER project. Your commitment, enthusiasm, and passion for transforming education have been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.

VRTEACHER training activities

The VRTEACHER training activities took place in all partner countries (Cyprus, Spain, Greece, Ireland, and Malta) between December 2022 and February 2023. The structure of the training activities was the following: Introductory online workshop, face-to-face training groups, and follow up online workshop. During the face-to-face training sessions the participants had to answer a pre-questionnaire before the VR implementation and a post-questionnaire after the VR implementation to investigate the impact of VR-based training. The final online session took place four weeks after the VR intervention and the participants were asked to fill in a follow-up questionnaire to investigate the long-term impact of the VR intervention.

In total more than 300 in-service and pre-service teachers were trained and had the opportunity to pilot test the VRTEACHER application. The consortium will elaborade on the results and feedback received to identify the impact of the VR training tool and its potential in teacher education.

VRTEACHER application

The VRTEACHER application developed as part of the project, along with its user manual are openly accessible and available in three langauages English, Greek and Spanish. The consortium invites teachers from partner countries and beyond to register using the website of the project https://vrteacher.eu/register/. All project’s resources including the VRTEACHER application are available for download through the project’s platform.

4th Transnational Project Meeting in Madrid

The 4th Transnational Project Meeting of the project took was held in Malta on Friday 11 of November, at the Valletta Design Cluster a 17th Century building that has been restored. The project partners had the ability to pilot test the final prototype of the VRTEACHER application, discuss the current state of the project, and plan the training activities.

VRTEACHER training activities

The VRTEACHER training activities will take place in all partner countries between December 2022 and February 2023. The structure of the training activities is the following: Introductory online workshop, face to face training groups, and follow up online workshop.

Presentation of the VRTEACHER project at ICICTE 2022

The VRTEACHER project has been presented at the twenty second International Conference on Information, Communication Technologies in Education, ICICTE 2022, that was held on the island of Rhodes, Greece, between 7 and 9 July 2022. The participants had the ability to use the VRTEACHER application prototype and provide useful feedback to the consortium.

3rd Transnational Project Meeting in Madrid

The 3rd Transnational Project Meeting of the project took place in Madrid from Thursday 23 to Friday 24 June 2022, at the Campus Madrid Puerta de Toledo of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. The project partners had the ability to pilot test the VRTEACHER application, discuss the current state of the project, and plan the training activities that will take place in all partner countries the following months.

Short-term joint staff training event

Universidad Carlos III De Madrid (UC3M) organized the Short-term joint staff training event (LTTA), on the premises of the University, situated in Madrid, Spain. The Short-term joint staff training event took place from Monday 20 June 2022 to Wednesday 22 June 2022. This training aimed to familiarize the staff of the partnership with virtual reality (VR) environments and equipment. Three participants from each organization attended this training event and will be responsible to deliver the training to the target audience of the project the following months.

COLLABORATION BETWEEN CYPRUS PEDAGOGICAL INSTITUTE AND CYPRUS UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY IN THE PROJECT VRTEACHER

Virtual Reality-based Training to improvE digitAl Competences of teacHERs

The Cyprus Pedagogical Institute (of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth) and the Cyprus University of Technology announced on the 11 April 2022 their official collaboration under the European Erasmus+ project entitled “VRTEACHER – Virtual Reality-based Training to improvE digitAl Competences of teacHERs ” (2020-1-CY01-KA226-SCH-082707). The Cyprus Pedagogical Institute will participate in the project VRTEACHER as an Associated Partner. This collaboration brings together two institutions that share a common goal of providing modern and technology-based teaching and learning approaches that will foster the digital transformation and modernization of education. This collaboration represents the beginning of a long-term planning for future collaboration initiatives and partnership between the two institutions.
The VRTEACHER project has the ambition to provide effective education responses related to educators’ training via using a novel VR-based pedagogical approach for virtual practicum. The project aims to address the need for modernization and digital transformation of teacher education and training and reinforce educators’ digital skills and readiness through a Virtual Reality (VR) training method and tool. The project involves six partners, Cyprus University of Technology (Cyprus / Coordinator), University of the Aegean, University Carlos III of Madrid (Spain), Fundación Siglo22 (Spain), Future In Perspective Limited (Ireland), Commonwealth Centre for Connected Learning (Malta). The project is coordinated by the Social Computing Research Center, through the Visual Media Computing Research Laboratory and Professor Andreas Lanitis and Post-Doc researcher Kalliopi Evangelia Stavroulia of the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts, Cyprus University of Technology.

IEEE Explore publication about VRTEACHER project

The partners of the VRTEACHER project participated at the 2021 International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE), that took place at Málaga, Spain, during September 22-24, 2021. The paper concerning the VRTEACHER project under the title “Virtual-Reality Based Crisis Management Training for Teachers: An overview of the VRTEACHER Project” has been published at IEEE Xplore.

2nd Transnational Project Meeting

The 2nd Transnational Project Meeting of the project took place online from Monday 29 November to Tuesday 30 November 2021. The project partners, Cyprus University of Technology (Cyprus / Coordinator), University of the Aegean, University Carlos III of Madrid (Spain), Fundación Siglo22 (Spain), Future In Perspective Limited (Ireland), Commonwealth Centre for Connected Learning (Malta) discussed the current state of the project, preliminary findings from the survey that took place, the development of the VR application, and set the next steps.

THE PROJECT

The VRTEACHER project has the ambition to provide effective education responses related to educators’ training via using a novel YR­ based pedagogical approach for virtual practicum. The project aims to address the need for modernization and digital transformation of teacher education and training and reinforce educators’ key skills and competences through a Virtual Reality (VR) training method and tool. The innovation of the project lies in addressing challenges related to class management in crisis situations, such as a pandemic, with the vision to equip teachers with key skills (e.g. empathy, perspective-taking, self­ efficacy, adaptability, etc.) through immersive and experiential training experiences that reflect real-life scenarios and situations faced during a crisis. The main target groups of the VRTEACHER project are pre­ service student teachers (higher education students, Ph.D. candidates, etc.), and in-service educators/ teachers. The main outputs of the VRTEACHER project will be a YR-based competence framework for teacher training and a state-of-the-art VR teacher training application that reflects real-life-based teacher training needs.

KICK OFF MEETING

The kick-off meeting of the project took place from Wednesday 9 June to Thursday 10 June 2021. Due to covid-19 social isolation restrictions the Kick-off meeting took place online. The project involves six partners, Cyprus University of Technology (Cyprus / Coordinator), University of the Aegean, University Carlos Ill of Madrid (Spain), Fundación Siglo22 (Spain), Future In Perspective Limited (Ireland), Commonwealth Centre for Connected Learning (Malta). The VRTEACHER project is funded under Key Action 2 of the Erasmus+ program and will last 2 years (0l/06/202131/05/2023).
